*hide_reuse *temp choicecount 0 "Well, I wasn't expecting this." You, along with the other nine contestants are sitting together in a circle inside one of the Odessan Palace's many large halls. According to Tiggy, this time together was pre-scheduled to occur right after the end of Arrival Day, just as a breather and more intimate introduction time. "Get to know each other. Share interesting facts, form alliances, or whatever you'd like. But no fighting." Tiggy narrows their eyes towards Bex and Stylus, who are seated as far as humanly possible from each other. "I'll be back in an hour to lock up. I suggest you take advantage of this time, as it will be one of the rare moments where no cameras will be allowed. Tootles!" The host wiggles their fingers as a goodbye and soon disappears from the room, leaving you alone with your maybe enemies, maybe best friends, along with a few guards to keep the peace. "'Share interesting facts'," Stylus attempts to mock Tiggy's previous statement, but doesn't exactly get the pitch correct. "What are we? A bunch of college students?" "A-Ah, actually, I am! I go to Bellview University. Majoring in astronomy and Fae history," Melanie says with a huge smile. *if (smarts >=65) Most of the circle nods politely, but you notice Bex stiffen ever so slightly. You tuck that action away in the back of your mind for later. It could've been a reaction to a sudden draft in the room but you couldn't be sure. "Fae history? How come?" Ridge asks, eyebrows raised. "I mean, they all used to live amongst us, right? Then a bomb kind of ruined all of that. What's there to study?" Melanie gasps so suddenly, you almost worry that her heart has actually stopped. "Oh Ridge, simply everything! You can't believe they're all gone. Plus, I think there's actually more connecting the Odessan Royal Family and the Fae than what meets the eye," Melanie replies. The sports-star just shrugs in response. "Hey, I paid just enough attention in my classes to stay on the team," he says with a little laugh. "But, I'd love to go back to school one day. So, I guess that's my little interesting fact." *page_break "School was definitely not for me. Learned all my video skills from other videos and look at me now! Easily worth over a million, and that's before all the sponsorships," Laurel brags with a huge grin. "Videos are my passion. I don't know what I'd do without them." "So you can hold a phone and a camera and get people to care about your glamorized life. Congrats." Stylus rolls his eyes and leans back in his chair, nearly tipping it over. "My company's helping put people on planets. Way cooler than a vlog, or whatever it is you call those things," he adds. "You mean your dad's company, as it's not yours yet. Not until you're married anyway." You look across the circle at Bex, who can barely keep the smirk off of their face. Stylus slowly eases down his chair in order to face them. "Alright, what's your problem? You've had it out for me since I've gotten here. All because I called you a farmer?" Stylus asks. "No, I have a lot of respect for farmers, which without them, we couldn't eat. That's why it was not an insult to me," Bex answers. "I believe that people in power should be called out as often as possible. Their shocked and surprised faces are just icing on the cake for me." They sigh and look around the room, meeting everybody's eyes, but spending extra time to look into yours before looking away. "I know a lot about everybody here, actually, though that little tidbit of family gossip is very easy to find with a quick search. It seems like I'm the only person here taking this as a competition and not a free vacation," they say with a shrug. Doodles shakes her head, still decked out in her Arrival Day dress. However, she was now wearing a pair of slippers covered in so much fur, you pitied whatever animal it used to be. "No way, I'm here to win. Sorry folks. But I will invite you all to our wedding! Well, one of three we'll have." She sighs dreamily, probably at the thought of being able to pick out multiple wedding dresses. *page_break "Well, $!{royal_first_name} only wants one, actually. Maybe you can change ${royal_his_her_their} mind, but I highly doubt it," Robin says. Her posture is incredibly straight, as if hundreds of cameras were trained on her inside of the room. Doodles huffs, Robin's words apparently interrupting her wedding dreams. "Look, Robin, I enjoy your runway shows and half of my closet is your fashion line, but there is a reason that we're holding this competition after all. Maybe you don't know as much about your ex as you think you do." The idle chatter between the other nearby pairings ceases at once. The two women stare each other down, sizing up one another. Neither one of them gets to respond any further, because Cass interrupts with a long whistle. "Wow, day one isn't even over and the claws are already coming out. I'm so glad I said yes to those guards." Cass copies Stylus' earlier move of leaning back on ${cass_his_her_their} chair while ${cass_he_she_they} talked. I didn't say too much," she replies eventually. "Hmm…let me see." Melanie then launches into a relatively short tale about her life. It's been her and her mother ever since she could remember. She's from a small speck of town in northern Odessa and started college at 16. "I went to a little community college to begin my history studies before I started attending Bellview. I just love to learn." She lets out a dreamy sigh before realizing where she was once again. "That's me, I guess," Melanie finishes with a shrug. "Thanks for asking, even if you really didn't care." *page_break *goto melanieqs #"Why do you like the Fae so much?" "I also find their history so fascinating. There are barely any classes at Odessa-affiliated universities, so that's why I'm at Bellview. Completely private." You nod, still not sure you believe Melanie is apart of that group, but crazier things have happened. This competition has proved that. "I want to learn all that I can, but also find out what really happened between the two groups. I know what's been written, but…how do we know that's real? "He was last seen in a town called Reign, which has long been rumored to have Fae connections." You eyes widen a bit at that information. "Isn't that where Bex is from?" You two shoot a look over at them and look away before they can catch your eyes. "Yes. But them being Fae? Doubtful. Plenty of humans live in Reign too though." Melanie's voice drops to a whisper. "I just feel a connection to the stars, the earth, just…everything that people might not immediately believe in. I could be crazy, but I might not be. That's why I study." She smiles a bit at you. I don't mean to cry in front of you but…" She wipes at her face so furiously, you worry she's about to break skin. "So many people think I'm crazy and try to discount me. Even if you never find anything, just saying that you want to help means the world to me!" She laughs and wipes away the rest of her tears and chuckles. "Good thing I skipped the makeup today." The two of you laugh in unison before moving on. *page_break *goto melanieqs #"Alright..." There are barely any classes at Odessan-affiliated universities, so that's why I'm at Bellview. Completely private." You raise an eyebrow at that. "Barely any classes? Why?" Melanie sits up straight in her seat, dropping her dread. "As everybody knows, King Frederick is not a fan of the Fae. So, if you're attending any public Odessan-affiliated university, no matter how prestigious, Fae history is pretty lacking," she explains. "Enter Bellview and a few other private colleges. Bellview is the only school with a Fae history major, hence why I chose it." You nod, tucking that bit of information away for later. "Whether I'm Fae or not, I want to learn all that I can. I always thought something seemed so odd about the conflict," Melanie continues. "Maybe I'm just too much of a conspiracy theorist. I don't know. But I hope to win, or at the very least learn more than what school can teach me." She sighs and leans back in her chair. "Let me get off of my soapbox," Melanie chuckles. "I have plenty of time to see what I can learn." *page_break *goto melanieqs #"Wow, cool!" I exclaim. *set melanie %+10 *set royalloyalty %+10 "Oh! You think so?" Bellview is allowing me to study when I can." You couldn't even imagine trying to think about five papers due while competing in a dating competition. "Also, I have been in school for ages, so it's like second nature at this point. This is almost a welcome break from it all." *page_break *goto melanieqs #"So tell me more about the Fae, then." Melanie's eyes practically glitter after you speak. "I mean, by no means am I the expert on the Fae, but I can tell you what I've learned at least," she says before smiling. "Go ahead." *label melaniefqs *fake_choice #I'm done asking questions about the Fae. *goto melanieqs #"What exactly are the connections between the Royals and the Fae?" "Officially, nothing beyond the usual pleasantries. The Fae have existed about as long as the Royal Family," Melanie answers. "They were revered like deities almost, given their magical powers. But there was always that separation." You nod. That sounds pretty familiar and along the lines of what you learned in school. "So some Fae would live in towns with humans, while others would have their own communities nearby. Humans were always welcome, so long as they respected the habitats." She frowns a bit before continuing. "Then, the Great Odessan Floods came. Humans started seeking out the Fae to help them recover, to stay safe, or for refuge. Initially, the Fae helped, but soon it got to be too much." Melanie shakes her head. "That's when Fae relations started to sour. Any Fae living in human towns moved to the nearest Fae communities. Humans were no longer allowed inside them for any reason," she says. "Tensions rose." *page_break "But then came a bright spot. King Martin, King Frederick's father, was invited to Fae Queen Aerie and Fae King Orion's coronation. It was the first time in decades a human was allowed to go to any Fae gatherings!" "Eventually things went south, right?" you ask and the girl nods. "That's an understatement." Melanie leans in and drops her voice to a whisper. "Correspondence was intercepted by both kingdoms. Apparently, two people in Court were engaged in a secret relationship and began to threaten their respective kings and queens in the letters," she says. "Nobody ever came forward, so the two kingdoms decided to start attacking until one surrendered and revealed the identity of the writers. Hence began the Great Odessan War." Your eyes widen a bit. Now that was something you didn't learn in school. "We were taught that the Fae started the war due to left over hostilities from the floods," you reply, which causes Melanie to smirk. "Not surprising since history is always written by the victors, no matter how untrue it is." Melanie's voice returns to its normal tone. "Nobody knows who the two people were, even to this day," she adds. "Probably for good reason too. Imagine telling your citizens that the biggest war of a generation started because of two people who couldn't keep their pants on." *page_break *goto melaniefqs #"Were they really all wiped out after the bomb?" "About 90 percent of them were," Melanie answers. "The rest are believed to have died in the years since…but I doubt that." She purses her lips together. "However, I haven't learned anything contradicting that yet," she continues. "There's been rumors of a town they might still be near, reports of random weather events, but other than that, they're completely underground." Melanie sighs. "Oh yeah, good luck trying to find anything with Odessan resources. There's no way of knowing how accurate it is. All our learning at the school comes from textbooks and first-hand accounts from the few people that were alive or fighting when it happened." *if (degree = "history") You understood that. Though your studies at Odessa University were extensive and pretty much anything you wanted was at your disposal, you had to admit that a lot of it was pretty pro-Odessa. Knowing the differences between your school and Melanie's gives you a lot of food for thought. *page_break *goto melaniefqs #"What did they look like?" *set eyeknowledge = "yes" Melanie whips out her phone and taps on it for a few moments before handing it over to you. "Pretty varied. Some could've passed for human, while others couldn't," she answers. "Depended on what part of Odessa they were in." You swipe through the images on Melanie's phone and the differences were astounding. Fae from the Far North had pale complexions and wintery white hair. Fae from the south had much warmer skin tones and long flowing hair. What they all had in common though were long pointy ears. "Scroll a bit further and you'll see pictures of the Fae Royal Family with King Martin. Probably the only picture ever of all three together." Sure enough, you find it. A couple stands together at the top of some rather steep stairs. One wears a floor-length dark black sleeveless dress with dew-like beads running down the front. Over her shoulders is a long, sheer yellow robe, with similar dew-like beading. Her hair is mid-back length and a fiery red. She wears heavy gold earrings and an equally heavy looking crown to match. Across from her is a very dark skinned man with a crown and earrings to match. He wears a yellow cape around his shoulders and a black tank top and dress pants. His muscular arms are decorated in a variety of gold armbands. The woman stares lovingly into the eyes of the man, who has an arm wrapped around her waist. However, she's holding the hand of another. *page_break "Wow, this man looks just like King Frederick," you say and Melanie chuckles. "Well, you're almost right. It's King Martin. King Frederick is pretty much the carbon copy of him." She peers over to look at the photo and stares at it as if she hasn't seen it a thousand times. "Fae Queen Aerie is holding King Martin's hand. A show of good faith, allegedly, though it didn't do too much in the end," Melanie explains. "She's looking into the eyes of Fae King Orion." You turn back to the photo. King Martin looks at Fae Queen Aerie with a polite smile on his face. He's decked out in a royal blue ensemble with a similar cape to Fae King Orion, but you get the feeling that it was probably a subdued outfit compared to what he would usually wear. Bits of King Martin's hair fall in front of his dark eyes which makes you realize something. "Wait, are their eyes purple?" Melanie nods, taking her phone back since you were done looking at the photo. "Only members of the Fae Royal Family have purple eyes. The rarest of the rare." *page_break *goto melaniefqs #I have nothing else to ask Melanie. "It was nice talking to you, $!{player_first_name}. I'm going to try to talk to a few others before I leave.
