The vendors have set up shop in Talverton proper, as you already know. On the banks of the lake, which you saw on your drive in, you'll be able to check out the carnival rides and games. You and Alex have a killer setup on the Darbury side of the water: blankets, snacks, and a cooler. It's all already there and waiting for you. The color concentrates at the center of the ruffled bloom like an invitation to take a closer look. In the distance, the spire of the cathedral rises up over the village, casting a much appreciated shadow on the cobblestone streets. The lake draws your eye in the opposite direction. The banks, covered in ambitions cattails, transform into a picturesque wood. You look forward to retreating into the cool greenery for the evening fireworks. Most buildings are three stories or fewer, which means you can see not only the village itself but the surrounding countryside as well. It's the kind of scene you would expect to come together on New Years as your family slowly but surely puts together the annual jigsaw puzzle. Finally the spinning starts to slow, and the stop-and-go unloading begins. The young, the old; the thin, the fat: they all mill about the claustrophobic street. And in the middle—a harried Judy trying to lay out pies. You and Charlie make your way over to her. "Did you make all these pies?" you ask. She looks up at you, her eyes wide. But not, oh-I-didn't-see-you-there wide—[i]get-out-while-you-can[/i] wide. Wispy strands of black hair escape her drooping ponytail. "What? Yes, I made them, all of them." "More importantly," Charlie cuts in, "what [i]flavor[/i] are they?" Judy continues to stare like something has cracked inside her skull. Charlie's smile is on the verge of collapsing, when Judy shakes herself out from under the spell and grins. "Berry!" The beep-beep-beep of a tenacious alarm sounds from Judy's wrist. Her eyes glaze over again with frenzy. "I've got to get these pies out!" She hurtles down the street, calling over her shoulder, "Sign-up's right in front of the bakery if you want to enter!" "Poor Judy," Charlie says, turning to you. That puts a new spin on the shirtless dudes. Jittery chitchat buzzes through the crowd in anticipation of the beginning of the contest. The next thing you know, Judy's standing on a little stage, microphone in hand. She works the crowd up and begins the countdown. "THREE!" "TWO!" Like a swimmer, you come up for a fleeting gulp of breath between bobs before chomping down on another bite of pie. There's barely time to taste the berries as they slide down your throat. *else Charlie's face hits the pie like a ton of bricks. Like the other contestants, her hands are tied behind her back, but that doesn't stop her. Barely a minute goes by before someone puts a new pie in front of her. The crowd holds its breath, like they're watching the qualifying trials for the Olympics, Judy commentating in the background.
