You suspect the steep roof was once thatched, but it has since been replaced with weathered wooden shingles. Catty-corner opposite the sofa, a wide, red club chair flanks the fireplace, a woven throw blanket draped haphazardly over its arm. Messy stacks of books dot the room, annexing every surface in excess of the wooden bookshelf that takes up most of the far wall. Wherever a book has failed to take up residence, a plant has taken its place. You barely have enough time to process the overwhelming scene before you're climbing down a set of stairs and into the kitchen. Wooden counters line the walls, but the middle of the room is clear of furniture, making the smaller room appear larger than the crowded living room. Pots, pans, utensils, and dishes hang from the walls or sit on open shelves. Carefully tamed and cultivated English flora climb up and over ancient stone fences that separate the small front gardens from the cobblestone road under your feet. The vines and flowers reach out to you as if to make your acquaintance. The sound of children's laughter bubbles out from unseen gardens and catches on the breeze. When you find the correct number, you step up and knock on the door. No answer. You knock again, more loudly, but, still, there's no answer. Deciding to take a chance, you walk to the end of the road and follow a pebble path to the back. The laughter grows louder, and you catch a glimpse of a red sweater as its owner darts past a break in the greenery. "This is Daisy, and those two—" he motions to the whippersnappers following you "—are Eddie and Summer." "And this is Margot," Daisy completes, shifting the chubby-cheeked toddler balanced on her hip. "It's good to meet you," you say.
