*image chapter_5.png As your body lay still on the floor, you could hear the carnage of a magic battle occuring before you. You strained to lift your head from the ground, and you turned to look at the fight. Morgana waved her hands once again, and blades of flame materialized in the air and dashed towards the masked figure. The masked man fired a beam of light from the red stones in his hands once again, and both attacks met each other with a fiery explosion. As the battle continued, you realized that Morgana was struggling against the masked man. Her magic was useless against the weapon that the masked man possessed. Morgana must have realized the same thing because she spoke to the masked figure, "Masked man, leave this place! If you leave, I'll... negotiate my return with the Yarvulians." You were surprised by her candid offer. He remained pensive for a few moments before replying to her offer, "Interesting proposal, White Princess." He continued, "However, I can't leave Anna here in Lahar. She needs to come with us, and she must be punished for betraying The Mistress." Morgana spoke, "'The Mistress' was a horrible mother to me, and she would undoubtedly kill Anna. I only offer myself, no one else." The masked man spoke, "I'm sorry, but orders are orders. I need you and Anna to come with me. Otherwise it's no deal." *page_break You were about to speak, but couldn't so much as whisper. The weapon the masked figure used on you is more crippling than you had imagined, and it became apparent that it would prevent your speech as well. The masked figure turned to you, and was silent for a few seconds. He turned back to Morgana and said, "Actually, I'd rather take you, Anna, and this Laharian back to Yarvul. The Mistress told us that she required a new guinea pig for her project; one that would replace you, code name: White Princess." He turned to face you and extended his palms. Your body slowly levitated off the ground, but he was stopped by Morgana's seething cry, "Don't touch ${mcpronoun}!" She flung her arms out and sent vibration magic coursing through the concrete below. The masked figure's spell fizzled, and he levitated a large distance from the ground to avoid her attack. Your body drifted downwards slowly, as soon as the spell vanished, and you were touching the cold streets again. The masked figure spoke to Morgana, "You were Yarvul's crowning achievement! Why waste your talents and gift, Morgana? Come back obediently and become what you were meant to be: The perfect weapon." She snarled, "I am not some weapon for you to use!" Her palms extended once more, and she sent a powerful shockwave through the air. This time, the masked man was knocked away, and he fell to the ground in a violent tumble. He stood up slowly and regained his composure. He spoke again, "What a shame, I guess I'll have to knock you out cold before you come to your senses. So be it." He lifted the red core from his palm and it shot towards Morgana. She dodged quickly and she began to sprint away from the masked figure. She looked back at you with a look of concern, but she continued without stopping. Soon she vanished from your vision. "Running away? Fine! It'll make this chase more interesting!" The masked figure chased after Morgana, and left you alone. *page_break You lifted your head from the ground to gaze back at Morgana and the masked figure, but your vision began to blur. Your hearing and sense of touch became duller as well, as time passed on. The sounds of the battle seemed to become more and more distant. The explosions and the distinct noise of spellcrafting begin to fade further and further away from you. It seemed as though the weapon used by the masked figure has left you entirely catatonic. A cloud eventually swept across your vision and hearing, and you were left nearly blind and deaf. The noise around your environment has been reduced to tinny and muffled disturbances, as a result of your weak senses. *page_break Beneath the muffled noises, you heard someone's voice. "...p..." "...Ge...p..." "...${fname}..." "...Get...up..${fname}..." A familiar voice rang through your head. You couldn't lift your head to see who it was, and your vision was too weak to discern the stranger. Suddenly, you felt your body lifted from the ground by two hands. You layed still, unable to do anything. The stranger was carrying you in their arms, and you felt your body shaking up and down as they ran. *page_break After a few minutes of traveling, the stranger layed you down on cold, bumpy cobblestones. You heard a voice call out again, "...p...${fname}?" You were still unable to make out what they were saying. In a sudden instant, your vision was covered in a blue light. You felt a warm sensation course through your body, and the cloud was lifted from your vision and hearing. Your environment became visible once again. When the sensation left your body, you looked up at the stranger. It was none other than Anna. She was smiling down at you with a look of relief, "Oh, thank goodness it worked. I was almost worried I had forgotten how to do that." You looked at her right palm, which was the source of the blue light, and stared at it discerningly. She noticed your stare and explained, "Don't worry. The effects of the Carbine Stone are negated by flumen luxis, it's advanced-level creation spellcraft." "Flu-men look-sees?" She nodded, "Yes, as unusual as it sounds, the weapon is incapable of permanently restraining you. The Carbine Stone works by clogging the mana in your body and interrupting your mental signals; which prevents you from spellcrafting, amongst other complications." You nodded. You wanted to ask Anna a number of things, but considering your catatonic state a few moments ago, your mind wasn't able to form the words yet. Anna studied you for a few moments. Then she spoke, "It looks like you're not quite up to speed yet. Here, this may help." *page_break Her hands retracted and the blue light faded. Then she extended her palms towards you once again, this time using a familiar glow from healing magic. You felt your strength return, and your mind returned to its usual clarity. Judging by the potency of her magic, Anna was very skilled in spellcraft. You were almost surprised by how quickly she was able to heal you. You were about to speak, but you were interrupted by Anna, "I'm sure you have many more questions, ${fname}, but right now we need to help Morgana." You replied, "All right." "Can you stand, ${fname}?" You stood up slowly and warily. Your legs were still a bit shaky, but they were more than capable of running. You replied, "Looks like it." She spoke, "Good, let's go." *page_break You and Anna approach the fight You both ran towards the direction where the masked figure and Morgana where headed. After a few minutes, you stopped to find Morgana lying on her knees some distance away. She was breathing heavily, and she was covered in soot and bruises. You started to run towards her, but Anna stopped you, "He's still here, so don't do anything rash. Morgana will be fine as long as we keep the masked figure away from her." You looked around you, trying to find the masked man. Suddenly, you heard a deep voice speak to you from above, "Well, if it isn't the traitor herself." Both of you looked up and saw the masked figure levitating high above you. Anna seemed to have recognized his voice and replied, "Bertrand? Is that you?" The masked man remained silent. Anna continued, "You were so small when I first met you. It's a shame we have to meet again like this. We became such good friends in the laboratories." He shook his head, "You are mistaken, I was only kind to you because of my ignorance. I didn't realize back then that you were merely brainwashing me to turn against Alexis." Anna replied in a dejected tone, "No, in fact I did the opposite. I was driving you into her arms without realizing it. Had I known what Alexis had been doing then, maybe you wouldn't be standing there." The masked figure hissed, "You have no right to criticize my choices, Anna! After you left Yarvul, The Mistress made life a living hell for the rest of us." He descended and summoned the Carbine Stones to his palms. He spoke again, "This conversation is over! I have a duty to fulfill. It's not something you would be familiar with." What is that? How is that possible?" "I've known about that device, long before its completion. In fact, I was one of the first researchers who worked on it." She looked at you, then she spoke with an impatient tone, "Now would be a good time to make a move, ${fname}." You nodded to her, "Right!" You stepped forward. His face twisted in anger, and he snarled, "I suppose I should take this more seriously." Bertrand removed the outer layer of his combat armor, revealing a complex mesh of gray metal beneath. It looked similar to chainmail, except it was padded with black metals. Once his heavy armor was removed, he took off his mask and revealed his face. Anna stared at him in horror, "What have they done to you?" When you looked at his face, you discovered that Bertrand was a man in his thirties. His eyes were an unnatural cloudy gray, and it made him look like he was blind. His face was weathered and pale, and his skin complexion was only one shade darker than Morgana's snow-white appearance. His face was clean-shaven, but his face was pocked with unnatural scars and imperfections. The cuts on his face were too clean and precise to be from battle or from an accident. He spoke, "This is the price we had to pay after you left. Receiving these has only made me stronger." He motioned to the marks on his face, "These are a gift from The Mistress. They are a sign of loyalty and obedience, given only to the best mercenaries and warriors." Anna shook her head, and she spoke in a disappointed tone, "She abused you and many others, and yet, you can no longer see that. Alexis has made you delusional." Bertrand laughed, "I'm delusional? I'm the one Alexis counts on! I am her trusted follower! You are just trash that betrayed her!"
