Mordain Cluranich: Good friend of Hardan It takes the value of bushel of wheat a week to feed a serf family. An acre of wheat will will produce 6 bu/year. Leaving a third fallow, you need 14 acres to feed a serf family every year. To pay taxes on that land and its produce, you need another 25%, or 18 acres. Another acre (of oats) and an acre of meadow will feed the ox to work that land. Another half acre of meadow will support the sheep needed for the clothing for the family. Another acre provides the capital for maintenance and repairs on the land. More acreage is a wealthier family, with capital left over in productive years. A 15 acre family--without the ability to hire out their labor--goes to bed hungry many nights, with malnourished children and shortened lifespans for the elderly. Meadow: A manor requires a minimum of 1.5 acres of meadow per household to support the minimum sheep and oxen requirement. Each warhorse also requires an acre of meadow, one of pasture, and eight acres of oats/barley to themselves. (While on campaign, a second acre of meadow-hay is needed to replace the pasture forage.)
