Daniel drove at an average of 30mph on the way to school and ran into minimum traffic. Under these conditions it took 8 minutes and 12 seconds before we were within sight of the destination. Based on these facts I estimated our house was roughly 3.75 miles away from the school. While we were going through the parking lot I used this information to calculate how long it would take for me to run that distance and the result came out to approximately 25 minutes assuming I didn't come across any trouble on the way. During the drive, I take another look at Daniel. Even after the eight months I've spent under his care, I still don't think I've quite gotten fully comfortable with his presence. Something about him has always seemed inhuman. There was something just too calm and cold. Too smooth and mechanical. He stands tall over most people, and while he is almost constantly wearing the perfectly smooth dark suit and sunglasses he wears now, I've seen him during morning training and he certainly has the physical build necessary for his work. It seems as though he was a well crafted machine designed specifically for his current job rather than a human being. Perhaps that's why I still can't really relax around him. Too much familiarity. Despite Daniel's urging to hurry, we were actually the first ones at the school. I looked around and saw some teachers were only just arriving and the sky was still mostly dark. "Be sure to talk to the principal before going to classes," said Daniel as I opened my door, "He'll explain what you're supposed to do." *if hatedan >0 "Yeah sure," I mumble as I shut the door only for him to roll down the window "I mean it. No wandering off, I'll know." "I know." He sighs like he's going to continue but his phone goes off, probably a message from his bosses, "Just...don't kill anyone." With those encouraging final words he drives off. 'Don't kill anyone.' Like it's ever been my choice. *if (hatedan =0) and (daddan =0) I silently nod my head, which seems to satisfy him enough. "Be good, alright?" "I'll try my best." He was interrupted when his phone went off. Upon looking at the caller id, his annoyed face told me it was his bosses. "I'll see you after school," and with that he left. *if daddan >0 "Yes sir," I answer obediently. He looks uncomfortable for a second and I wonder if I said anything wrong but he eventually says, "Just...be good, okay?" "I will, I promise." "Okay..." With a slightly sad look he drove off. He always got that look whenever we talked like this... *page_break Next Finally here, alone with nothing but the school in front of me and the cold early morning air nipping at the back of my neck. Eight months of social training and learning eight years worth of education leading up to this one moment. This is the first time since we started living together that me and Daniel have been more than 100 yards from each other. *if hatedan >0 It feels like a big weight has been lifted from my shoulder. Now that I think of it, this is the first time since I was a little kid that I didn't have to worry about someone watching my every move; not that things were much better previous to that. Of course there was still the cuff around my leg, but it was an interesting sensation. *if (hatedan =0) and (daddan =0) I feel somewhat vulnerable, being in the strange open world without my guardian to watch out for me and talk to people that I came across. There's a freedom to it, but a fear of the unknown as well. It's an interesting sensation. *if daddan >0 I feel vulnerable without Daniel there to watch my back and make sure nothing bad happened. I'm sure I can survive, I've been doing it all my life, but even so; being without my lifeline in this country is an...interesting sensation. *if hatedan >0 When Daniel told me to head straight to the principal's office I mostly blew him off. That was mainly because... *choice #I was planning to go anyway. He didn't need to remind me *set frienddan +1 *goto_scene 1-3principal-1 #I can think of something better to do with my time before school *set bored +1 *set hatedan +1 *goto_scene 1-3wander-1 *if hatedan =0 I promised Daniel I'd head straight to the principal's office. Given that, I... *choice #Head straight there, as promised *set daddan +1 *set frienddan +1 *set reflex -1 *set stealth -1 *goto_scene 1-3principal-1 #Still decide recon is more important in an unfamiliar environment *goto_scene 1-3wander-1
